Stretching the Canvas; exhibit part of the Sallie Bingham Symposium
CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS OF ART
The Sallie Bingham Center for Women's History and Culture in Perkins Library will host its third biennial interactive symposium on October 26 and 27:
"Neither Model Nor Muse:
Women and Artistic Expression."
EVENT:
We will explore the ways in which women have expressed themselves through three centuries and many art forms. By means of exhibits, performances, artist demonstrations, workshops, and other sessions, and from the perspective of students, faculty, staff, scholars, and, of course, artists, we will consider the contributions of women to visual, literary, and performing arts. The event will take place at Duke on Friday, October 26 and Saturday, October 27.
EXHIBIT: We will offer four exhibits on topics related to the symposium theme. For one of these exhibits, we invite women students to submit new or previously completed pieces -paintings, photographs, needle work, multimedia work, etc.**- on the theme of "Stretching the Canvas: What Does it Mean to be a Woman Artist?" Chosen pieces will be displayed on the walls of the student gallery space outside the Gothic Reading Room in Perkins Library.
- Large format (11 x 17 or larger), two-dimensional pieces that lend themselves to wall-hanging preferred.
DEADLINE: September 21, 2007
