"The 6,400 undergraduate students at Duke are all Durham residents, and we should have far more contact (and not the kind of contact that generally occurs at 2:00 on a Sunday morning) with you, our neighbors. Community interaction is a major priority for the new Duke Student Government, and we have a long list of projects we want to pursue, including community service efforts, Duke-NCCU joint initiatives and events that will facilitate student-community interaction."
--Letter from DSG to the Durham Community, published in the Herald-Sun
From DSG Community Liaison Daniel Bowes
Every Duke student is a citizen of Durham. Likewise, every Durham resident is a neighbor to Duke.
However, the excessive demands university life places on first-year students, coupled with the usual difficulties of entering a foreign community, have, in the past, prevented many students and community members from developing meaningful relationships.
Accordingly, DSG considers it a primary goal to facilitate and support genuine community interactions that have been absent in the past.
In preparation for a vigorous year, Elliott, myself, and other members of the Duke student community spent their summer breaks meeting with community leaders representing every aspect of the Durham community, including individuals from Durham Human Relations, North Carolina Central Student Government, and Walltown, Trinity Heights, and Trinity Park Neighborhood Associations. Through these meeting, many great ideas have been put forth and vetted.
This year, we are and will continue to see the fruits of these labors?neighborhood barbeques, a multitude of events co-sponsored by Duke and NCCU, more community members taking advantage of Duke's abundant resources, etc.
As Duke students venture into the Durham community there will undoubtedly be an assortment of opportunities to learn from the diversity and richness of the Durham community. In turn, it is our sincere hope, that Durham residents come to know the faces and personalities of our gifted student body.
Are you a member of the Durham community who wants to interact more with Duke students? Have an event in the community you would like us to publicize on-campus? Are you a Duke student who wants to learn more about cool things to do and people to meet in Durham?
