CAMPAIGN STATEMENTS! VOTE THIS THURSDAY, 2/5/09!

Exec VP

Anumeha Goel

I'd like to get involved in ESG to work with students, faculty and administration to sustain and enhance the resources and opportunities at Pratt. In the role of Executive Vice President, I look forward to assisting the President and ESG in managing existing events as well as promoting new initiatives. Specifically I'm interested in promoting student interaction with faculty and Deans to encourage open-ended dialogue and sharing of ideas to improve the Pratt experience. I also want to work on developing creative ideas for events like E-Socials and the E-Ball to give engineers more opportunities for fun!

CFO/Treasurer

Soo Choi

Major: BME Class: 2010 (current junior) Gender: Female Interests: Soccer, Traveling, Food/Cooking, Pacman

Why you should vote for me for CFO (Treasurer)...

  1. I am the current Publicity Chair of ESG (previous experience with ESG)
  2. I am very organized, responsible and committed
  3. I am friendly and approachable
  4. I am always open to new ideas

If you vote for me I will...

  1. Do my job: Make sure our money is being used wisely and appropriately
  2. Solve the problem of the lack of usable computers in Hudson and Teer
  3. Make sure E-Ball happens this year!!
  4. Strive to make ESG more transparent to the Pratt Student Body (money use, meetings with the deans, project initiatives)
  5. More vending machines in Hudson and Teer WITH Duke card swipers!!
  6. Try to create more fun events while keeping our current annual events such as "E-Picnic" and "E-Softball"
  7. Assist in creating a more 'study-friendly' environment in Pratt
  • ensure staplers and staples are always present in Teer and Hudson!!
  • make sure there are working dry-erase markers at every lecture hall that has a whiteboard in Pratt

Kevin Nathan

Hi everyone! My name is Kevin Nathan, a junior BME/ECE major, and I am hoping to have the chance to serve as Treasurer for the Pratt student body. As treasurer, I would like to:

  • be a representative for my class/major/students at ESG meetings
  • work closely with the heads of engineering student groups to ensure their needs are met when setting the budget
  • improve transparency of ESG and letting students know what goes on at meetings and how money and funds are allotted
  • look to have more student input on event planning
  • ensure functional staplers at all e-print stations on E-Quad.

Publicity Chair

Joav Birjiniuk

I'm a sophomore majoring in biomedical engineering, and am involved in Pratt both as a student and a researcher. As a member of the executive board of Duke Friends of Israel for the past two years, I have organized and publicized many events, and am now the Vice President of Culture. My job entails creating events and making people aware of them, which is what I would like to do for ESG. I am creative and organized, and I believe that I can help publicize ESG events not only through flyers but also through effective e-mails and word of mouth. I would like to create publicity that will make engineers feel welcome at, and excited about, ESG events.

Katrina Wisdom

A WISE Prattie votes Katrina WISDOM for Publicity Chair! She’s…

Well connected. A non-engineering Focus cluster. The Duke Dance Program. The DukEngineer magazine. I have established a variety of connections throughout different parts of the University, and would feel comfortable approaching any of the people I have worked with before for an ESG subject.

Enthusiastic. Claim to fame: winner of the engin-nerdiest costume award at the Halloween E-social (as a Rubik’s cube, naturally). I would love to play a bigger role in helping to plan the events within our wonderful e-community.

Creative. Publicity Chair must find ways to attract people to our AWESOME Pratt events! In addition to my own ideas, I have read several books about effective advertising and how to best get people to NOTICE!

Organized. I have been an officer in three high school clubs, and have spent much of my life thus far learning how to time-managing effectively. I am reliable and get my work done!

WISDOM. Because an ESG Officer by another name just would not be as sweet.

Admin Associate/Secretary

Jenny Pan

  • I will take the position of Administrative Associate/Secretary very seriously.
  • I’m highly organized (and LOVE color coding things) so keeping track of the meetings, contacts, and events so my responsibilities will be done efficiently.
  • I would like to make Pratt more well-known and more visible on campus.

Director of Comm. & Tech/Webmaster

Emily Poplawski

My desire to join ESG comes from my love for the Pratt School of Engineering. Although my classmates and friends have at times identified me as a Californian girl or a jokester, I’ve always personally labeled myself an engineer (however, some of my classmates do indeed call me “ECE girl”). I would like to join ESG because it is an opportunity to realize my true identity as an engineer in the Pratt Community.

As a junior at Duke, I have become involved in many organizations. I serve as a Board Member of the Undergraduate Judicial Board, a panel, which hears infractions of Duke University politics and determines proper sanctions in maintaining our university’s high ethical standards. In my sorority, I am the Career & Personal Development Chair, a position that helps my sorority sisters connect with professional opportunities and enrichment. In the Pratt community, I write for the DukEngineer magazine and hold the office of Secretary and Head of Communications in One Laptop Per Child, a community service organization that gives Durham elementary school children laptops. The office of Secretary and Head of Communications has similar responsibilities to the Director of Communications.

Thank you for taking the time to read my platform. I’m especially excited about the personal project that I’ll be doing.

Best,

Emily Poplawski

Community Service Chair

Ally Crooks

-- STATS: Ally Crooks, Class of 2012, running for Community Service Chair

-- WHY: I love doing community service. Sounds a little trite, but I really do think that we get just as much out of it as those we're doing it for.

-- CREDS: I founded the Make A Wish Foundation chapter at my high school my sophomore year and we raised over $6,000 every year to grant one child's wish. I've also been involved with Invisible Children and FLAG (an animal shelter). I really want to bring new organizations to Pratt and work to make a difference. I was also in the inner-club-council in high school so I'm a baller at fundraisers and networking.

- Thanks guys! Vote ALLY CROOKS for Community Service Chair!

Laurel Gray

Experience:

  • WILDERNESS GUIDE (2008): led high adventure expedition treks through the desert plains in New Mexico, taught survival techniques, carried a massive First-Aid kit.
  • ALPHA PHI OMEGA National Community Service Fraternity (2008-2009): held executive positions such as Scouting Representative and Historian; participated in community service activities including (but not limited to): gleaning crops, mulching at the NC Zoo, helping with the “Santa Train” at the NC Museum of Life and Science, and distributing medical supplies for REMEDY.

I will provide:

  • beneficial and mutually agreeable fundraising ventures that are efficiently planned and executed
  • fun and exciting community service opportunities
  • a strong voice in ESG and a forum for your input
  • Band-Aids as needed

Senior Class President

Rita Lin

Hi my name is Rita Lin, and I would like to be your Class of 2010 President. During these past 3 years at Duke, I've been actively involved in ESG and have witnessed the power of engineers working together. But we have the potential to be so much more. Therefore, I am ready and grateful for this opportunity to serve my class as President.

If elected, I will work on the following:

  • Improving the lives of engineers through an accessible supply store on the e-quad, ordering small-medium shirt sizes, putting vending machines in CIEMAS and Hudson, and introducing exclusive Pratt events, such as weekly buses to Target and a ski trip.
  • Offering special senior events, such as a Pratt Etiquette Dinner.
  • Improving E-Socials by inviting experts, especially those within Duke, to talk about what they do and allow for discussion afterwards

It's a new generation, guys. It's time to show the Trinity kids how awesome it is to be in Pratt.

If you have any questions or comments, please email me at rita.lin@duke.edu, add me on AIM (ritzness), or post on our facebook group, "Pratt is Where It's At - Class of 2010." We currently have over 100 members, so please use the group as a resource to connect with your classmates. Thank you for your time, and vote Rita Lin for President 2010!

Jason Ethier

I Stand for

  • A Fantastic Senior Year

o What do you want to make next year your best at Duke? What do you need to make this true? I want to help you cement fond memories of our great Duke experience.

  • Promotion of Strong Community Identity

o I will expand the weekly E-Socials to make them more accessible and fun for underclassmen.

Am I right for the Job?

  • On previous merits I was hired last summer as a lab director at MIT with seven undergraduate and three graduate students working for me.
  • I am currently slotted to be the future leader of the Duke Motorsports Team, a dynamic club with leadership demands similar to ESG’s.
  • I know and have worked closely with a majority of the other students who hold or are running for Office within ESG and I know I can work well with them to deliver on my campaign my promises.

Will Patrick

Hi, Pratt 2010! Through my experience as EWB President and co-founding the DukeEngage Uganda program, I am running for ESG class president because I can turn ideas into reality. Have you enjoyed grilled corn and sausage at Oktoberfest? Let's bring grilling to every E-Social. Feel like course evals fall on deaf ears? Let's leave a legacy by starting the needed curricular reform with more design-oriented labs, intro courses that are smaller and more interactive, and prioritize the hiring of Professors of the Practice. Don't know what's after graduation? Let's facilitate networking between us and recent grads in engineering, medical, and business schools.

Junior Class President

Maura Mulroy

Hey Pratt Sophomores! For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Maura Mulroy. I’m your current class president and I’m running unopposed for the same position next year. Since I don’t really have to win you over, I’ll quickly let you know some of what’s in store for the next semester:

  • Pratt gear in the Duke Bookstore
  • A new and improved E-Ball
  • E-Kickball
  • E-Picnic
  • E-Socials

As always, don’t hesitate to get in touch with me if you have any questions, comments, or new ideas.

Sophomore Class President

David Piech

Experience

  • ESG Class of 2012 President Fall 2008 through Spring 2009: I know the ropes
  • Current ‘personal project’ includes branding the ESG with a recognizable logo
  • Committed to continued hard work to bring you great events

Ideas for Pratt students

  • Organize new eSocial and ePicnic activities: a Ballista water balloon war
  • Foster more student-Dean interaction: ‘dunk the Dean’ at ePicnic (or Dr. G!)
  • Continue ESG tradition: catchy free t-shirts and Duke’s best social event – eBall

9/15/08

ATTENTION FRESHMEN ENGINEERS!! This Friday, September 19th, you'll get the chance to vote for your class president on ESG!! Here are your candidates:

Ally Crooks: I'm Ally Crooks and I would love to be the class of 2012's ESG President. Experience: While I was an officer in high school clubs, I learned the most from working with the Make A Wish Foundation. I established a new chapter at my school and found confidence in my own voice as a leader. I organized school-wide fundraisers to grant a $6000 wish every year. Banding together and constantly thinking of new events, we achieved our goal as a team. I want to share my experience in planning fun events and creating a strong ESG community for the class of 2012. So vote Ally Crooks for ESG Pres and you'll get results!

Amber (Yaqi) Su: I’m running for ESG Class of 2012 President because I haven’t done things like this before and deserve a chance to give it a try. I’m out-going and love to make life enjoyably funny and easy—a little laugh never hurts…well probably more than a little, hey who knows=P Anyway…all I want to do is make Pratt a happy place where everyone loves. And if, *coincidentally*, that’s also what you want, let’s do it together.

Christopher Bayliss: Other than the prerequisites (hard work, etc.) for the position, here is what I will bring as president. Creation. As a junior, I founded my school’s varsity track team. Goals. Creating the team took months to do, so I can see through not only short term tasks, but long term projects as well. Multi-tasking. Presidents perform a wide range of functions: student-faculty intermediary, budget designer, event creator etc. As a senior I was president/captain of four organizations. Sacrifice. Most importantly, I will give my time, energy, and thoughts to make the government work for you.

David Piech: We’re engineers, so flowery language is not necessary; here’s what you need to know to vote:
DAVID PIECH FOR ESG 2012 PRESIDENT
Experience
o Student Body Representative on Board of Education (2005-2008) – policy
o Student Council Executive Board (2005-2008) – event organization
o Science Olympiad Team Co-Captain (2007-2008) – engineering leadership
Ideas for Pratt students (oh snap! that probably includes you)
o Improve eSocial participation – meet more people
o Better ESG - Pratt communication – email updates if desired
o Continue ESG tradition – keep eBall Duke’s best social event

Heidi Slater: Hey everyone! I'm running for 2012 ESG president because I want to make sure that we have the best time as Pratt freshman possible. In high school I was in student council and had VP and President positions for other clubs, so I’ve had plenty of experience planning and coordinating with people to make sure everyone has fun. I love getting to know people and planning events, and I want ESG to benefit everyone in Pratt and organize great events that we’ll all want to attend and have a great time at. Vote for me if you want that too!

Jeffery Ding: Fellow Pratt freshman, let us forget the formalities of humility for a moment. We all know it’s true; Pratt engineers rule. We are the highly exclusive group of Duke, with the awesome privileges that ESG entitle us with: E-socials, E-ball, E-everything. If you want this year to be even the best for all of us engineers, vote for me, Jeff, as the class of 2012 president. I will try to make the already wonderful events that ESG hosts even more successful this year. Short and simple: for a president with a nice ring to it, vote Jeff Ding!

Jenny Pan: Running for a position of any sort should never be taken lightly. Being ESG Class of 2012 president is an office for which I want to take responsibility. I want to represent the freshman class of engineers, but it is not about what I want, it is about what you want. There are over three hundred engineering students in the class of 2012, and I’m committed to listening to the voices of not only future engineers, but of future world-movers, world-builders, and world-changers. I believe that Pratt is bigger than its number and I think it is important that Duke students understand this fact. The qualities that have allowed me to be in your company will allow me to a great president. It is not about how many activities I have planned or how many t-shirts I have designed, it is about the commitment I have towards making Pratt students the best on campus.

Kevin Lieberman: I want to strengthen our class, both academically and socially. For example, we?re all taking the same classes but no one really knows who else is in their classes. I want to create a huge list with everyone's name, dorm, and class sections, so that we'll know whom to contact if we're sick and need notes or if we want a study buddy. I also want to run mixer programs such as a "Date an Engineer Night" with speed dating games so we can meet other engineers. I've planned a national two-week summer program and school and youth group events.

Martin Steren: Hi, I’m Martin Steren and I want to be your Pratt Class of 2012 President. I know that I’d make the best choice for president, because I have extensive leadership experience. As an Eagle Scout, I led my troop as Senior Patrol Leader and Jr. Assistant Scoutmaster, and I additionally led a service project that had over 200 volunteer hours building and mounting wood duck nesting boxes for local parks in the Milwaukee area. I also have served as president and vice-president of my youth group, co-president of my school’s Model UN club, and I helped lead my school’s science team. Some goals I would like to achieve as president include installing engineering related art in the Fitzpatrick center and creating a rocketry club at Duke.

Russell Glorioso: PARTIES! FOOD! LATEX! Now that I have your attention, let me introduce myself. My name is Russell Glorioso and I am running for ESG freshmen president. I had plenty of leadership experience in my high school’s class government and I want to bring all I have to offer to Pratt. I am so excited to get involved with ESG and I have so many awesome ideas. For one, we could throw e-social’s on east campus so freshmen engineers could get to know each other better. I also want to bring more food to the table—literally—in the form of lunches during the school week. Finally, I want to make sure our class T-shirt is absolutely out of this world! If elected I not only listen to your ideas, but forcefully act on them. Vote Russell for ESG president! YES WE CAN!

Vaibhav Narayanam: I am running as the class president of the engineers in the dirty dozen because the engineers in our class are all amazing individuals and I would like nothing more than making the Duke experience for all of you as amazing as it can be. Furthermore, I feel that I would make a worthy candidate as I am someone who will listen and push ideas that can enhance our time here at Duke and because I am an "outside of the box" thinker who will bring a fresh perspective to ESG. I will represent all of you, your ideas, and your perspectives to the best of my abilities, thus making a vote for Vaibhav Narayanam the same as a vote for yourself.

Will Hunter: I want to make Duke a better place. I want to make Pratt a better school. The best place for me to start changing the world is as your ESG Freshman President. As your president, I would connect you with anything you need to develop or further your own ideas. I am persistent, caring and full of heart. If you need something for a project, talk to me about it and we‘ll make it happen. I want to help you make our world a better place. I live by the motto, “If you have the ability, you have the responsibility.” To your school, your world and yourself. That’s why I am running. Whatever your abilities may be, I want to work with you to change the world.

Here are the candidates running to be YOUR ESG reps!

Vice President:

Jason Greenhut:

I am running for Vice President of ESG to fulfill the mission of the Engineering Student Government: to represent the engineering student body in all matters related to the Pratt School of Engineering. Most of all, I want to serve as Vice President so that I can represent student interests to the ESG council. Whether it is a single student with an ambitious idea, an engineering club requesting funding for a project, or an angry mob demanding free t-shirts, I will make sure that all every voice is heard. I would also like focus on creating more student-faculty interactions. Though faculty are certainly accessible to students academically, ESG sponsored lunches would foster a more personal student-faculty experience. Finally, as Vice President, I would continue ESG’s superb service record to the engineering student body. Through my 2 ½ years at Duke, I have experienced the joys of ESG sponsored E-socials, E-picnic, and E-softball, and I would maintain that tradition of excellence. I sat on my high school student council for four years, and I will use that experience to accomplish my goals next year. As a candidate for Vice President of the Engineering Student Government, I pledge to work as hard as I must to ensure that no student’s voice is left unheard.

Patrick Ye:

My name is Patrick Ye, and I'm a sophomore running for executive vice president. I was elected Class of 2010 president last year, and some of my contributions include providing pizza for a Physics 62 review session, helping to organize Exam Breakers, and running a cell phone service survey to improve reception in Pratt. As vice president, I think I have the experience to help lead the incoming ESG members. Besides ESG, I've been active in Pratt through Engineers Without Borders and as a Pratt Ambassador. I'd love to serve as your ESG representative and make Pratt more fun for everyone.

Community Service Chair:

Rita Lin:

Hi there, I'm Rita, a class of 2010 BME major. I've been part of ESG for the past year, so am really looking forward to continuing to be involved with making your Pratt experience amazing. I was the community service representative for my freshman dorm, Alspaugh, last year and spent much of my time coordinating exciting events with the house council. If elected, some of the ideas I'd have include making holiday cards for hospital patients as part of e-social, buy-in-donation Pratt Assassins, most likely divided by class, and continuing to host engineering activities once a week with the students at the elementary school on Central campus. Thanks for your time, have a good day!

Mollie Oudenhoven:

Duke University comprises such a large part of the Durham community that I believe we are in a position to make a large difference outside the borders of our school. For the past two years, I have been a tutor at one of the local elementary schools for America Reads/America Counts. One of the foremost challenges for this community this area revolves around keeping children engaged in their schooling, especially in the math and science areas. I would like to implement a type of mentoring program to inspire and excite kids about the sciences. For such a small gesture, it can make a large difference.

Treasurer:

Phillip Danser:

As treasurer, I will create financial transparency within ESG. I will accomplish this by preparing a financial report at each ESG meeting. Officers will get a better grasp of how much funding is available to sponsor new events and increase funding for student groups. I am qualified to become treasurer because I have had real-world financial experience. I have managed 200+ eBay transactions and have analyzed register reports for AT&T Mobility. My majors are Civil & Environmental Engineering and Public Policy Studies. I currently serve as Class of 2011 Engineering Student Government President.

Secretary:

Jessica Barlow:

Hi my name is Jessica Barlow and I am a Junior CE running for Secretary of ESG. I would be a great secretary because I am a very organized and responsible person, and I complete tasks well ahead of any deadlines. I also have very neat and legible handwriting and am very good at taking notes at meetings. I am also extremely involved in Pratt through the American Society of Civil Engineers and Society of Women Engineers. I love being an engineer and hope to spread my enthusiasm to everyone within Pratt!

Pres ('09):

Alex Gorham:

Dearest Pratt,

What will we see in the coming year?

Ceaseless problem sets in the basement of Teer?

Breaking edge research on science’s frontier?

More people at e-socials enjoying the beer?

To help, here are some of my modest plans

Hudson vending machine with soda cans

Book exchanges making high price bans

Wine tasting sessions for the gustation fans

More surprises may come our way

But let’s not discourage or dismay

Instead strike a balance between work and play

And enjoy life in Pratt each and everyday

(this is so cute, props Alex! :D)

Pres ('10):

Ankit Prasad:

DEEDS NOT WORDS. As Class of '10 President, I will represent YOUR VOICE in the Engineering community with DEDICATION and PASSION. I will ensure ESG's functioning is TRANSPARENT and ANY 2010 engineering student may approach me anytime in person, phone (919-943-6303), or email (ap77@duke.edu) for comments, suggestions, or criticism about ESG's programs and policies. As a member of the IA board for two years I have been crucial in successfully organizing major campus events such as foodfest and springternational and I shall bring the same level of DISCIPLINE and LOYALTY to ESG. VOTE FOR ANKIT PRASAD. AND BE HEARD.

Pres ('11):

Maura Mulroy:

Hello freshmen engineers! I’m running to be your class president because I love Pratt and I want to give back to our amazing engineering community. I think I am a good candidate because I know how to listen to and fulfill student needs. I’ve had extensive student government experience, including heading a committee that obtained a $20,000 grant to refurbish a part of my high school. Perhaps more importantly, I’m a fun and approachable person. I sincerely enjoy meeting my fellow engineers and I want to help organize events that you’ll all want to attend. Vote for me, Maura Mulroy.

Avishek Panth:

I am a stand for moving the ESG from its traditional role as mainly a social event organizer to a role in which the ESG represents the totality of engineering students' interests. I will push for the ESG to assume a greater degree of administrative privileges, liaison with the administration and the DSG, provide discretionary spending to class presidents (so engineers of the class of 2011 can organize our own events), and give out more free t-shirts (so I don't have to do laundry as often). For someone with the determination to see an idea through its implementation and the listening to hear what needs to be done, vote Avishek Panth for Class of 2011 President.

Mark Elstein:

Dear Pratt freshmen and undergraduates,

I would like to run for ESG freshman president because I am passionate about engineering, and I want us all to have a great time! I consider myself to be deeply attached to the Pratt community and a proud member of it, and would love to serve our student body. I would work hard to represent you all, advocate our common interests, and bring fun events to E-Socials and other planned occasions that you would enjoy. Of course, I am hungry for everyone’s input and suggestions, because each and every one of us counts, and my goal is to make Pratt as exciting and interesting as possible. I want us to be able to walk away from an event saying, “That’s one of the great things about Pratt.” Furthermore, I am interested in continuing to get to know as many of you as possible.

I am involved in several engineering clubs, including Smart Home, RoboCup, Motorsports (FSAE), Wired 2 Achieve, and CPS149S, and am a member of Randolph dormitory’s House Council as the technology chair and floor representative. I am or have been a participant in a variety of non-engineering clubs such as Environmental Alliance, Duke University Union’s Major Attractions committee, Habitat for Humanity, and Cable 13. I am also an alumnus of the Focus program Virtual Realities.

For more information and updates, please visit my campaign Website at: http://www.duke.edu/~mpe3/vote/esg.

Whomever you vote for, I just hope that our Pratt experience continues to be a blast!

All the best, Mark P. Elstein Class of 2011

Publicity Chair:

Soo Choi:

I am running for Publicity Chair of ESG because I wish to break the stereotype that engineers do not know how to have fun by planning a lot of fun events and most importantly publicize and advertise them better. Furthermore, I would love to get involved in the planning of the legendary engineering T-shirts and make sure they are representative of what we are: funny and smart. Overall, I want to get involved more in the Pratt community. I believe I am well suited for this position as I love planning events, dedicated, friendly and a fun-loving person.
