DUU in the News

Coverage in The Chronicle

News for October 2007

Wassup Duke,

DUU wishes everyone the best of luck during this difficult midterms season. But just to put a little smile on your face in the midst of cramming sessions and late night walks back from the library, we thought we’d let you in on some major events coming your way in the next few weeks. So get your head out of that book, and make sure to get your DUU at these huge campus-wide events:

REGINA SPEKTOR — GET YOUR TICKETS TODAY

Billed as one of the “hottest women in rock,” award-winning singer Regina Spektor will be gracing us with her lyrical beauty on November 19th. A huge up-and-coming artist in the biz today, DUU is proud to bring her to Duke — you should be too!

Tickets go on sale on Monday, October 1st (today) at 10am. Visit the Box Office in the Bryan Center or go to www.tickets.duke.edu to get yours today.

FORMER NBA PLAYER & CIVIL RIGHTS ACTIVIST JOHN AMAECHI COMING TO DUKE

We are extremely honored to feature John Amaechi, the first openly gay basketball player in the NBA. Formerly of the Cleveland Cavaliers, Orlando Magic and Utah Jazz, Amaechi is a renowned spokesperson for the civil rights movement and a NYT-bestselling author. Don’t miss this amazing opportunity — put October 17th on your calendars now!

SOUTHERN COMFORT: THE DUKES OF DURHAM

Remember the library party? Duke Royale? DUU does it southern-style with its campus-wide event, coming to the Dirty D in mid-October. Featuring amazing food, even better drinks, down-home entertainment, and hopefully you.

Don’t miss what will be the signature event of the semester on October 17th.

JOE COLLEGE DAY

From the early fifties until the mid seventies, Joe College weekend was firmly engraved on the social calendars of all Duke Students. DUU seeks to bring back this fine tradition and once again provide the campus with a DAY-LONG MUSIC FESTIVAL AND PARTY, just like it used to be.

Joe College will showcase some of the best acts from all over the music scene: Mule, Grace Potter and the Nocturnals, Will Hoge, Ryan Shaw, Endless Mic, and Nelo will be here at Duke on multiple stages performing for you. A beer garden, amazing food, and other entertainment will make October 20th a day to remember for a long time.

It’s gonna be “LDOC on Steroids,” as Dr. Moneta has said, and if he’s excited about it, you should be too.

SPEAKING OF LDOC…

The Last Day of Classes event chairs are now recruiting members for this year’s committee. Have a part in planning this hallmark Duke event by applying for a spot today. Visit union.duke.edu today to apply — send yours in before Sunday, October 14th. If you have any questions about the committee, feel free to email Cha (cmg25@duke.edu) or Vincent (vincent.ling@duke.edu). We look forward to your application!

Good luck with your tests, but DUU’s events with definitely help release that stress. With concerts, speakers, and parties coming your way, help DUU take back Duke today!

Love,

DUU

10. Future DUU Events-Get Ready!

1. First up, coming all the way to Durham NC from the Windy City of Chicago, IL is the internationally-renowned SECOND CITY COMEDY TROUPE. Founded in Chicago in 1959, The Second City has become the premier training ground for the comedy world’s best and brightest. Their alumni list reads like a who’s who of American comedy, as it includes: Mike Nichols, Elaine May, Alan Arkin, Joan Rivers, Robert Klein, Peter Boyle, Harold Ramis, John Belushi, Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Gilda Radner, George Wendt, Martin Short, John Candy, Bonnie Hunt, Tim Meadows, Chris Farley, Mike Myers, Tina Fey, Steve Carell, Stephen Colbert, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Horatio Sanz, Ryan Stiles and countless others.

Not only will an evening with The Second City provide audiences with the chance to see comedy stars in the making, but they will also have the opportunity to see absolutely hilarious satire and cutting-edge improvisation. If your parents asked you not to speak about it at the dinner table, chances are it will be made fun of in an evening with The Second City.

Tickets are only $5 for Duke students and are going fast. Go to the Box Office in the Bryan Center or tickets.duke.edu to get yours, and we’ll see you on September 7th at 8pm in Reynolds Theater for an awesome night of laughs.

2. And that’s not all we have up our sleeves. You might have seen one of the top-grossing films of the summer, HAIRSPRAY, in a theater near you, but now the REAL BROADWAY PRODUCTION is coming here to Duke’s Page Auditorium for a special one-night only performance. It’s going down Sunday, September 23rd, and tickets are as low as $15 for Duke students. It will be a night you don’t want to miss…so don’t, and buy a ticket today!

Interested in theater? Want to meet the cast and crew? Come to the DUU post-Performance reception – email Julia Kraus (Julia.kraus@duke.edu) to secure your spot.

3. BORED WITH CAMPUS LIFE? THINK DUKE CAN BE BETTER? NEED SOMETHING TO DO WITH YOUR TIME? JOIN DUU. We want you to join the Union. Seriously, we do. There is no better way to get involved on campus. The Union is run by students and its programming is inspired by them, too. Want to have a say where your Student Activities fee goes? Join the Union, and have a hand in making Duke a more exciting place to be.

IT’S EASY TO JOIN, TOO. Our Executive Marketing Committee and our 12 different programming bodies are actively looking for members. The Union will be holding an informational session on September 5th, 2007 in White Auditorium on East Campus, especially for our new froshies, to talk about our upcoming events and getting involved. If this event doesn’t fit in your schedule, don’t fret – just email Rob Carlson at rlc14@duke.edu and he’ll give you more information. We’ll get back to you immediately, and you’ll be part of Duke’s largest student-run organization in no time. If you do nothing or twenty things, there is a place for you in DUU. It’s as simple as sending an email or filling out a form. We look forward to hearing from you!

4. LDOC COMMITTEE CHAIR APPLICATION DUE SEPTEMBER 7th Although we are sure everyone is still recovering from last year’s LDOC celebrations, DUU and Campus Council are thinking ahead this year! We are proud to announce the Last Day of Classes Committee Chair application process. The application is available on the DUU Website (www.union.duke.edu) and at the info desk in OSAF. Questions? Please email Katelyn Donnelly (krd4@duke.edu) or Ryan Todd (ryan.todd@duke.edu) for more info.

5. LIKE MOVIES? WE GOT THE BEST OF ’EM.

Freewater Presentations is dedicated to bringing films, whether they be summer blockbusters, European art films, or Hollywood classics, to Duke's campus. Quadflix films, recent popular movies that generally attract the large audiences, are shown on Saturdays and Sundays. Freewater films, shown on Thursday and Friday nights, are also recent releases, but sometimes independent or shown in a limited number of cities. These are some of the best moves of the year, though not everyone always has a chance to see them. In addition to these movies, Freewater also screens Tuesday series, a collection of movies united by a common theme, director, actor, etc. Freewater projects and coordinates each of these movies and members are involved with choosing and screening the films that the committee brings. If you're excited by films, look forward to a new release months in advance, read about film history, or click to Apple trailers everyday, you belong in Freewater.

Upcoming movies include: 300, The Lookout, Spider-Man 3, Zodiac, Hot Fuzz, The Lives of Others, and 1408
