Student Link:About
From Student Link
Student Link is a website dedicated to making it easy for student organizations at Duke University to quickly, easily, and uniformly update important information on the internet. The site is open to any interested student group at Duke, and will allow them to build a home page. The website also happens to be home to many of the major student-organizations on campus.
[edit] Why Student Link?
The role of Student Link is to make students more aware of the activities of organization over which they have direct control, more informed about their role in them, and more empowered to take advantage of the opportunities these organizations present.
No previous project has had the capacity to:
- Fully address all of the opportunities available to someone who wants to plan an event (Considering they could request money from DSG, Campus Council, and/or coordinate the event with a larger University Union event)
- Fully address how a student publication or non-profit organization is founded (Which requires approval from DSG and UPB/Community Service Center respectively)
- Keep totally up to date with information on these organizations (no website for any of these organizations has ever been updated with regularity due to the nature of the access level OIT grants to student webmasters and frankly, student laziness -- the solution here has been to hire work-study students who are familiar with Wikipedia-style editing to update and expand the website).
- Maintain a unity of style, presentation, and purpose among all these organization websites, making users comfortable with accessing the information they present (the UPB's design used html standards from 1998, while the Union had a new design every 6-12 months. So did DSG. Campus Council was conducting a re-design at the time Student Link was created.)
