At the beginning of the Heart Monitor unit, stations are set up to teach students about different electrical engineering concepts (breadboards, resistors, amplifiers, filters, and instruments), and about the heart (parts of the heart, heart arrhythmias, stethoscopes). Groups of students rotate through these stations so each student has the opportunity to experience each station:

  • Oscilloscope
  • Stethoscope
  • PQRST Waveform
  • Anatomy of the Heart
  • Filters

During the rest of the Heart Monitor unit, students pair up and build an EKG from an Electrocardiogram Heart Monitor kit available from Hobbytron.com. After the students are taught to correctly solder, they follow instructions provided with the EKG kits and build the heart monitor circuits while supervised by the Fellows. Upon completion of their EKGs, students test their circuits by using an oscilloscope to view the EKG and themselves (or an EKG simulator) to provide the signal.
