Irem Mertol

Irem Mertol
Irem is currently a junior at Duke University majoring in Biomedical Engineering and Economics. As a freshman she had the opportunity to participate in the Howard Hughes Research Program, where she not only learned more about the research and experimenting process, but also became very interested in learning more about how to apply the information and skills learned in her classes. She has also been involved with the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) for the past two years and has had the opportunity to volunteer for several activities focused on teaching and allowing younger students to become more excited about mathematics, science and engineering and she believes that the Techtronics program is a great opportunity to work more closely with students to share her passion for engineering and the sciences.

Luke Waggoner

Luke Waggoner
Luke Waggoner is a third year student studying biomedical engineering and mathematics. He has a strong affinity for math, science, and problem solving, making engineering an almost ideal major for him. In his spare time he enjoys practicing gymnastics, reading, and anything involving the outdoors. Luke hails from Las Vegas, Nevada, where he graduated first in his class. He also achieved the rank of Eagle Scout while participating in the Boy Scouts of America. At Duke, Luke is involved with Project WILD (Wilderness Initiatives for Learning at Duke) and the Duke Conversations Society. Since coming to the University, he has been looking for ways to become more involved with the surrounding community of Durham and is excited for a great first year of Techtronics.
