Sylvia Qu

Sylvia Qu
This is Sylvia’s second year as a Techtronics Fellow. She is a junior double majoring in Biomedical Engineer and Biology with hopes of becoming a veterinarian. In the future, Sylvia hopes to work as a field researcher in an effort to save an endangered species. At Duke, she is currently conducting research on the creation of a three-dimensional biocompatible scaffold that supports muscle tissue generation. Besides spending half of her conscious time in the engineering quad, Sylvia has also been satisfying her passion for photography by working as a photographer for The Chronicle, Duke’s student-run newspaper. Her other interests include reading the classics, visiting national parks, and traveling abroad. She believes that education at a young age is crucial for the development of a strong and healthy mind, and is excited to help promote an enjoyable learning experience outside the traditional classroom by linking scientific concepts with hands-on fun.

Carol Chen

Carol Chen
Carol Chen is a senior biomedical engineering major and psychology minor. She chose to study engineering because she likes to work with her hands and to create and fix things. In her free time, she likes to draw and play guitar. Because she attended public schools prior to coming to Duke, she knows the importance of after school programs in enriching a student’s education. Carol thinks that the Techtronics program is a valuable opportunity to excite younger students about science, to help them develop an interest in science and engineering that they might pursue in college, and to encourage them to think more critically about the world in which they live.
