Governance

The role of the Vice-President for Community Interaction is to act on undergraduate concerns in the area of community interaction and external affairs (student-student interactions, faculty-student relations, Duke-Durham relations, etc.). In addition, the Vice President of Community Interaction is responsible for running the process of Young Trustee Selection and head the Young Trustee Nominating Committee. He or she also heads the Inter Community Council. Specific examples as stipulated by the DSG Constitution for some of the interactions dealt with by the VP of CI are:

  • Work to develop fund-raising strategies for organizations by establishing working relationships with the Office of Alumni Affairs, University Development, and Public Affairs Chair and coordinate the activities of the Inter-Community Council and direct the Young Trustee Process.
  • Coordinate activities between the SOFC and the Community Interaction Committee and be an advocate for student groups, their campus importance, and their participation in student government issues.
  • Ensure strong ties with the Office of University Life as the committee and the administration to foster cooperation in programming and planning.
  • Serve as a liaison to the Community Service Center to develop new training programs and service initiatives to be handled by the Community Service Center.
  • Work to facilitate cooperation and communication with IFC, Panhellenic Council, and other social or residential organizations to ensure their representation in student government issues and their involvement with interactive campus projects.
  • Assume the Legislative reserved seat on the Union Board
  • Vice-Presidents of the student government shall be the primary contact with the administrators in their respective areas.

Improving the Undergraduate Community

Social

  • Maintaining, improving, and expanding the on campus event that allow all students to drink, eat, and have a good time. (Broadhead Ball, Nasher Event, Duke Royale, etc.)
  • Increasing the number of social spaces on campus and making registration easier
  • Consolidating the red tape i.e. paperwork for social events on campus
  • Allowing students to vote on the existence of selective living groups and fraternity living space on campus before making any changes to the system
  • Creating programs focused on sensitivity to work with student leaders to decrease the tensions among diverse groups of students on campus

Political

  • Improving communication among DSG senators and the student body through the DSGCONNECT project.
  • Working to increase the visibility of all campus wide elections with the aim of increasing the diversity of the Presidential Committees, The Judiciary Committee, Duke Student Government, etc.
  • Including and soliciting ideas from student groups about the issues addressed by DSG.
  • Increasing the accountability of DSG senators by working with the Executive Vice President to publish the projects, attendance, and participation of all senators

Student-Administration and Faculty Interactions

  • Increase the accessibility of administrators to students through the creation of monthly office hours for major administrators on campus
  • Continue the use of town-hall meetings as a venue for student discussions with administrations
  • Work to increase the proficiency of freshman advisors in two ways
    • Match freshman possible major interests with an advisor in one of those areas
    • Provide more comprehensive training for advisor with the help of student volunteers instead of just faculty
  • Address the possible need for advisors for Economics majors instead of the current impersonal advising center the “EcoTeach” center
  • Encouraging the use of the Duke Conversations program and creating other venues for small group interaction with teachers

Student-Staff Relations

  • Keep the Duke Excellence Program
  • Work with Campus Council and the RC’s to post with permission residential staff workers photos and bios in dormitories to facilitate friendly relationships between students and residential staff
  • Host a Student-Police Barbeque at the beginning of the year providing pamphlets, and a time for students to ask questions about NC laws, alcohol policy, etc. as well as engage in casual discussion.

Duke-Durham Relations

  • Maintaining the C-5 bus route that gives students access to off campus locations like Ninth Street and Brightleaf Square
  • Increasing Duke’s partnerships and the accessibility of off campus service opportunities, internships, and entertainment venues for students.
    • Increase the openness of the Duke-Durham Partnership to student volunteers
    • Provide carpooling lists or Duke subsidized vans to off campus service locations
    • Discuss the addition of some off campus eateries that accept Duke Points at on site locations
  • Work with Dining Services to add more campus eateries
  • Tipping on Points
  • Maintain the current relationship with NCCU and encourage student groups to join with NCCU student groups on community oriented projects
  • Keep the Durham Unity Fest

Re-Evaluate the Young Trustee Selection

  • Review the efficacy of the changes made to the Young Trustee Selection process this past year
  • Re-evaluate the bylaws for the entire process to ensure fairness and efficiency in the entire process
  • Increase advertising and making the effort to approach student groups about encouraging all students to apply
  • Address the concern regarding the weight of the ICC vote versus the DSG vote through an open forum, obligatory for members of the ICC and DSG and open to all other students.

The Inter-Community Council

  • Bring more ICC issues to the DSG senate
  • Encourage member of the ICC to attend DSG meetings or send a member of their group to each DSG meeting
  • Promote legislation by other student groups on campus
  • Increase the amount of collaboration (events, ideas, etc.) between groups on the ICC

Other

  • Work with the Graduate and Professional Student Council (GPSC) to create a mentorship program for students seeking advice regarding post graduation plans (Law School, Medical School, Graduate School, etc.)
  • In committee meetings
    • Delegating responsibilities fairly and efficiently
    • Support projects of senators, guiding and providing the necessity administrative connections and University knowledge to make them successful
    • Ensure the completion of projects and the dismissal of senators who fail to participate or be effective in DSG
